World of Warcraft: A Game or an Obsession
In the 1980’s Atari Video Games was very popular. Almost every one had an Atari set in their home and they were mostly concerned with playing games like Pac Man or Dare defender to pass the time. It was almost a sacrilegious event and although the games were very easy to play; they were perfect for taking your mind off the problems in the 1980’s such as the Cold War. However, as the computer technology and gaming technology progressed, there were more and more people who were playing more complex games to pass the time. Then the trend changed to multiplayer games on the Internet. Now playing solitaire was not enough and people started to look for games that could be played online. Games like Age of Empires, Dune and Red Alert regained their popularity with the ability to play these games on the Internet. However in the 1990s and 2000’s they were quickly replaced with games such as Half Life, Counter Strike and similar games that could be played on a network level or in the Internet.
However as computer technology and Internet progressed, then games with more people could join online became very popular. The World of Warcraft was such a game as it could be played with a massive number of players on the Internet. The World of Warcraft is essentially a fantasy role playing game that takes its setting in a fantastic environment of elves and dragons. It is a good game in general and there are over 9 million people who play the game. (The game creator makes about $14.99 every month from each player in a monthly payment basis. Think about the massive revenue generated)
However as fun and joyful as it may be, for some players it has become an obsession. In fact the gold that is used in the World of the Warcraft Universe is really worth something in the real world, as you can buy gold from other players for a certain amount of money. There are people out there who spend couple of hundred dollars to buy a limited amount of gold to use in the W o W Universe. This seems like obsession and you could end up damaging yourself in the process. It is important to remember that World of Warcraft is a fantasy role playing game and it is a fun game to be played. But it should not become an obsession to the point that it disrupts your life in the real world. Of course, you should play and you should enjoy yourself as much as possible. But never forget that you also have a life offline and act accordingly. |
